Intensive group courses
20-25 academic hours per week
A Dutch language camp for adults – the most efficient way to learn Dutch!
Every year about 300-350 people from all over the world participate in the Dutch Summer School. Read what they say about their stay; and have a look at the pictures/videos. We had a great time and are looking forward to the next Summer!
Age
People of all ages can participate (minimum age = 18 years). About 35% of our participants is below 25, 40% between 25-40, and 25% is above 40 years old.
Objective
Our students study Dutch because of: relocation to the Netherlands/Flanders, business, civic integration exam, Dutch roots and/or relatives, as a hobby.
Instruction language
Command of the English language is obligatory on the levels 0, A1 and A2 (instruction language). On the higher levels, the teacher speaks only Dutch.
Our Dutch lessons are interactive, with a high focus on conversation, given by enthusiast teachers. Although the teacher will speak Dutch from the beginning as much as possible, we use English to explain things on the lower levels (mainly level 1, 2 and a bit on level 3). On the higher levels (4, R), the teacher speaks only in Dutch. Maximum group size is 14 students.
We use our own book ‘Het Lesboek’ from 0 to A2 (level 1, level 2) and ‘Het Lesboek-2 (level 3, level 4). On level R we work each time with different materials (the course on B1/B2 level specifically for returning students). Read more here: level descriptions.
Homework & e-learning: doing the homework is essential (count on at least 3 hours per day). Part of the homework consists of online materials. With these materials you prepare for the next day’s lesson: that makes the classroom lesson more efficient and interactive.
The social environment is important. An important successfactor in learning a language: not to be afraid to make mistakes.
The experience of a summer school is maximised when you meet new people with the same goals. Study together, do homework together, do sports together or explore the environment together.
Our unique acommodation (chained living units) is ideal for socialising with other students, and having great summer nights!
We do not force you to participate in additional group events. Each person is different and you should do what you like. We are easy going: no obligations… (except doing your homework!)
In 2017, we developed our own learning method: Het Lesboek. This method integrates with Bart de Pau’s online materials (the online course #dutchgrammar and the ‘Heb je zin?’ videos where Dutch grammar and vocabulary is applied in daily conversations).
The learning method is more than just a book: every lesson is a completely prepared set of presentations, role plays, games, speaking exercises, with a strong focus on applying vocabulary and grammar in real conversations.
The students of the Dutch Summer School will get free access to the e-learning package during the course:
– #dutchgrammar (from 0 till A1)
– #dutchgrammar-2 (from A1 till A2)
– #dutchgrammar-3 (A2/B1)
The package contains video tuition/exercises for self study (homework), but also serve as a backup in case you can not attend a lesson.
Access is included:
– for Pre Summer School students from 1st of May to 1st of July
– for Summer School students from 15th of June till 15th of September
Can’t wait? You can also buy premium access that gives you 1 year access to these packages (49€ + tax per level). It can be helpful:
– to prepare online prior to the summer – to enroll on the next level
– to review after your summer school participation
Everyone can buy e-learning package #dutchgrammar (also if you don’t attend the summer course).
At the 4th of August 2015, at TV-crew of RTV Drenthe visited the Dutch Summer School for an item in the regional news program.
